connotations, but it's been used in a very *specific* and American sense
post-9/11, and Pynchon (the astute NYC citizen and American author that he is)
is not only aware of that sense. It's a hard sell to convince me that it
isn't being used in this Foreward in that very specific sense to convey his
social commentary. Arguments to the contrary seem to be making
contradictions for their own sake.</FONT></DIV>
