there's lakes here big enough to feel like oceans
and the sunlight hits them just as hard--
rebounds into my eyes until I squint with every wave
and they fling water upward in splayed white fingers
it's like laughter heaved at the shoulders of the world
and rocks forget me just as quickly,
they cool so soon after I stand
and they sneak the moon out of their bed just as guiltily
it skulks up in the dark between the trees
weaves excuses for its other lovers out of shadows
and monsters live in them
