Kraftwerk died and went to hell. Front 242 pound out dense electronic
percussion grooves layered with minimal bass lines, growled vocals, and
plenty of exotic, enigmatic samples. Alienation and menace fairly ooze out
of the speakers. Front By Front (this title appears only on the spine)
doesn't have the consistently aggressive bass drum of "normal" dance music,
but the continuous sixteenth-note ratchet and the crackling backbeat keep
things moving forward: Don't believe them when they sing "We're in the
doldrums". Tempos are given in the liner notes for the benefit of
adventurous DJs.
