I have to agree that the film has one of the worst endings of ALL TIME. At the same time, it also has one of the greatest openings. (PTA has an incredible visual style) The problem is, the rest of the film just cannot hold up.
The potentially great story (Altman-esque) and undeniably great cast really should have been given a better script. A simple re-write from a more seasoned writer could have allowed the film to be great.
I recommend keeping expectations low and paying matinee prices.
