*Halfway Down the Stairs* is by charles Thompson (1930-) and was published
by Harper, NY, in 1957. I don't know if he wrote anything else, and I
can't find a copy in Vancouver - Dartmouth has one, at least.
  All I can remember is that it was big in its day and had a "whole sick
crew" flavor to it - I seem to remember an undergraduate suicide - those
notorious Cornell gorges.
