Leave us not forget Vineland NJ, which is mentioned by Hakim Bey as home to
various throwbacks (the Kallikaks and Jukes, unless I misremember) -- whom
he regards as whites "gone to Croatan," people who dropped out of European
society to join the Injuns. All of this some 300 years before the Pequot
built their casinos and bought Connecticut for six cents on the dollar.
Time, you know, Jimmy, time is a strange thing...
The sixties-survivor underground in Pynchon's novel maps pretty neatly onto
these poor Preterite ones; so do the Thanatoids; and of course the
denouement features *actual* native americans.
