hi,
i can add a little curiosity from the point of view of an italian reader.
i confess that the TP band's names sound really coherent with a certain
kind of "musical youth" here. lot of bands here play a sort of demential
oriented music, and all of them have these funny names, basically because
their goal is to make fun...of themselves mainly. even punk bands.
when i think to Billy Barf i can't avoid to imagine some punkish cartoons. some
tiny toon band. i think there could be some nice examples even in USA ( but
flame me if the idea is silly ), just bands like "the Dickies" or "The
Revillos", which come -as far as i know- from the 'surf' coast, and had, like
some newer garage bands, that kind of attitude that makes them to replicate
something of the past that probably didn't ever exist. attitude which seems
one of the thousands interpretation's layer in Vineland...expressed in a very
simplicistic way, just like as the people's consciousness of the past times
were made of stereotypes which are built with a sinergy of symbols, just like
it happens on TV, and these stereotypes in the end don't necessarily belong
to the real world, but they are still 'believable', and meaningful : DL as
ninja is the easier example to carry, but i think there are a lot of sixties
symbols sinergized you can see easily than me....
it's just a thought. feel free to flame me if you think i haven't understand
anything of the book :-)
