Deeply Subjective & Continually Expanding
CONCORDANCE
to
GRAVITY'S RAINBOW
by
THOMAS PYNCHON
Version 2.0.6
When I first read Gravity's Rainbow, although mightily
impressed, I felt I had only scratched the surface. I decided to re-
read it in order to more deeply explore what seemed like a richly
textured, magical new world. On that first read, I could have really
used an index to aid me in keeping track of the myriad characters and
acronyms. I also wanted my friends to read it, and I knew that an
index might make their first pass a bit less daunting and
overwhelming.
I found that the second read was the charmer, making the first
one seem like an initiation or weeding out process, kinda like "I'm
not gonna let just anyone read me." It reminded me of those random-
dot stereograms where an image first appears to be merely an
interesting pattern but, with prolonged viewing, suddenly and
dramatically opens out into an amazing 3-D "world." Of course, I look
forward to many more visits. No wonder there are no dog-eared copies
in used bookstores!
The tracking of the various names, themes, techniques, u.s.w.,
actually enhanced the reading, as I found myself pulled into the
complex web and paranoid as any of the connection-seeking characters.
Tracking words like "paper," "shadows," "bulb" or "black/ white," I
felt like hapless Oedipa spying ever more postal horns, and at some
point even thought "Am I being had?" [Well, yes...and no] I didn't
even try to list them all in this concordance. I also took a very
liberal view of "entropy," "routinization of charisma," and other
concepts. There're many ways to skin this cat.
So here's my map of the planet GR. It is based upon my own
explorations and intuitions. It's the first e-text concordance of GR,
and it's absolutely free! Godel's Theorem dictates that is shall
always remain incomplete.
I make no pretenses to rationalizing this fantastically
charismatic text. This is merely intended as an aid to the first-time
reader, as well as a way for repeaters to locate favorite passages,
etc. I'm open to suggestions and comments. I see it as an ongoing
project and look forward to input.
The page numbers refer to the original Viking editions (1973),
paperback and hardback, and to the Penguin edition (1987).
