hi all,
i'm new to the list ( i am italian ), and i would like to ask you if anybody
has read Georges Perec's "La vie, mode d'emploi". the book was suggested as
one of the most meaningful Pynchon's reference in the literary world.
i don't know if the question sounds silly, but i am currently reading it
and from my opinion there is lot of Perec in Pynchon's book ( or vice versa ).
Perec's book is the story of a building in Paris, in which the writer imagine
to get off the walls to see every particular of inside. with a 'puzzling'
style he describes each person living in, each one who has lived, and related
stories.
the main character, Bartlebooth, remember a lot "V."'s Stencil. he plans a
huge project for his life : 10 years of painting lessons ( 1 every day ),
and then 20 years in which he will go to 500 different seaports to paint
them, then will send the paintings to a 'puzzle'-maker who will set them
into a fixed number of pieces, will close them in a numbered box, and then
will return them to the owner ( Bartlebooth ) who at the end of the 20 years
will re-set together eache puzzle ....
the book indeed has something who reminds V., even it is quite different in the
factual plot, but the main reasons which push the character to do what they
do, are the same : Stencil, being asked why he looks forward for V. answer
"why not?", and Bartlebooth the same "porquoi pas?"
what do you think ? starting from the fact that i've read Pynchon's book
in italian ( and never read _GR_ which never been translated ), please,
don't flame me if i had posted a well-known argument. if not, i am willing
to hear other opinions ...
regards to everyone.
