Subject: Pynchon conference

Announcing Conference:
"THOMAS PYNCHON: Schizophrenia & Social Control."
Warwick University, England, 18-19 November, 1994.

Cost of the conference is not set, but it will be cheap for students and moderate
for professional academics.

More information can be obtained by writing us at the Centre for
Research in Philosophy and Literature, Department of Philosophy,
University of Warwick, England, CV4 7AL. Phone: 011 44 0203 523 523.
The E-mail address above is also good for more information, or for anyone
interested in attending and/or giving a paper.

The conference is designed to be of use to scholars working within
the traditional field of Pynchon criticism. At the same time, we hope
to create a space for innovative approaches to both Pynchon and the
themes in his work. Of particular interest are papers focusing on "narratives of
disintegration," Pynchon and chaos theory--literary criticism, Pynchon and
cyberpunk, French Continental Philosophy and the thematics of schizophrenia as
applied to Pynchon, or more specifically the work of Gilles Deleuze and Pynchon.
This is a partial list of themes: all proposed topics will be given
equal consideration. We are primarily interested, however, in
_GRAVITY'S RAINBOW_, _VINELAND_, and _V._ Innovative essays on
_LOT 49_ will be considered, although the conference is designed to
highlight Pynchon's other novels.

Interested parties should send an abstract (300 words) and a title to
us via E- mail or the Centre. Notification of speakers will be made
on 1 September.

We hope to collect the conference papers and publish them in _PLI: THE WARWICK
JOURNAL OF PHILOSOPHY_. We are also considering a bootleg tape of the proceedings
and perhaps an underground video.
