As to me, N. Katherine Hayles's essay "Metaphor of God Knew
How Many Parts": The Engine That Drives _The Crying of Lot 49_
has been the most insightful individual discussion of Pynchon
and entropy - she shows the issue of entropy to be part of the
novel's wavelike general dynamics. It's in _New Essays on _The
Crying of Lot 49_, ed. Patrick O'Donnell. (Cambridge U P 1991)
It's all the better if you read it together with her more
specific comparison between Brillouin (entropy as exhaustion)
and Shannon (entropy as multiplication) in her _Chaos Bound:
Orderly Disorder in Literature and Science_. (Cornell U P 1990)
