Looking for Author/Title

I am trying to recall the title and author of a book for
which Thomas Pynchon wrote a support notice several years
back.

The book was about a German film director during the Nazi
era. (It was a novel.) I believe that the author's last
name starts with the letter "A".

(I lost my "used bookstore list" and am trying to reconstruct
it.)

Can anyone help me out?
