RE Dialog

Steelhead's comments made me think of Nashville, which I just watched the
other day. Its the same kind of issue in movie terms, though with the added
effect of simultaneous voices (one could argue that 'linear' narrative can
achieve simultaneity via the aural and intellectual resonances of which JJ
was/is indisputable master). In fact, the simultaneity in Altman is not
only aural but situational as well, first because you're trying to sort out
multiple soundtracks at the same time as a visual thread is going by, second
because the narrative is multiple stories interspersed. While some viewers
even now continue to be irritated by Altman's refusal to provide
single-thread service, for me it works very well---I feel the choice of
narrative attention is respectfully let to the viewer.
