I don't know if this has anything to do with Paul's lack of e-mail, but the
ironies were inescapable and relevant to this list.  I too was off the net
over the weekend, because some homeless people near Minneapolis built a
fire under a bridge, which melted phone wires and optic-fiber cables.  I
suspect them of subscribing to W.A.S.T.E. !

The meltdown knocked out net communications in the region for a couple of
days.  Apparently things are back to normal now.

Reminds me of my trip to London, en route to Warwick, where I stopped for lunch
at a pub that seemed to have been populated out of BBC central casting, from
the jolly blonde barmaid on down.  Next to me were two gentlemen, impeccably
dressed, dining on fish and chips.  One--in very cultured Oxbridgian tones--
said, "I do like to take my dog for a walk in Kensington Park on Sundays, but
I do wish that the City Council would do something about those homeless people!
They can make it quite unpleasant!"
