The Date: and Subject: fields reminded me of a line from Barth's
"A Poet to the Rescue," written during the Vietnam war:

"In the _Odyssey_, speaking of the ten-year Greek expedition against
 Troy by which almost nobody on either side gained more than he lost,
 and most lost everything, Homer casually remarks that wars are fought
 so that poets will have something to sing about."

OK, back to work on my twenty-three-hour chamber opera, _The Death of
Anton Webern_.
