Tom Ferebee was the Hiroshima bomber, Kermit Beahan the Nagasaki bomber.
Beahan died in 1989, but Ferebee is still alive at 76.
In a recent (August 7) interview with the Charlotte Observer, picked up by
the Associated Press, Ferebee came across as remarkably human, and had what
I think is a pretty incisive view of the whole horrible event.
I quote:
"I'm sorry an awful lot of people died from that bomb, and I hate to think
that something like that had to happen to end the war," Ferebee said.
"Now we should look back and remember what just one bomb did, or two
bombs....Then I think we should realize that this can't happen again."
Ferebee said he had never felt guilt for his part in the bombing, but added
that thinking about it was easier when Beahan was alive, "because there were
two of us who had done it."
"Now I'm the only one in the world," he said. "It should stay that way."
cheers, erik
