The thing that turns me off about the bomb is that it's a big waste of
energy. That, and the fact that it turns so much interesting information
into useless noise, so quickly.
The thing is, what life is all about is capturing energy and using it,
squeezing every last bit of use out of it, before finally giving off that
one tenth of one percent, the devil's tithe, as heat....Meanwhile it has
cleverly used the other 99.9% to perpetuate itself. Now that's sexy! The
trick is to conserve energy, to use it in very tiny, linked steps, treating
it as the precious cargo it is, spilling as little as possible, until what
started off as the the simultaneous ejaculation of a million billion H
bombs, eight minutes away from "the planet of love," is transformed into,
say, bananas in the garden on the roof.
On the clear winter morning when Pirate empties his head, commando-style,
and begins his descent of that spiral staircase, not unlike Buck Mulligan
with razor and bowl on tower steps, but innocent now, as a chimp bearing
bananas, he is descending through a million generations, slowly learning to
think with each turn of the helix, until he arrives, not into the sound
and fury at the end of entopy's parabola, but into the sweet warm light of
culture, under the protectorate of an altogether different shape, one with
a mandate to make the most of every blessed photon...
Waste not, want not...
