Just thought of something else.

This could also refer to the scarcity of non-white pitchers in baseball
- more so when GR was written than now - in general, the percentage of
non-white pitchers is/was quite lower than the percentage of non-white
baseball players in general. So it could be referring to the sinister
white conspiracy that keeps others "il-equipped to approach a Holy
Center".
I don't know how plausible this is, though - just thought I'd get it out
of my system.
