Tall white cliffs...

Next month's Harper's has an article, "Legends of the Fall" about the 
white cliffs along the Englisg Channel. Talks about various suicide 
attempts and successes there. I couldn't help but think of that bit in GR 
as I read it. It also mentions a plaque there to some Canadian fliers 
lost "in the inept Dieppe raid in 1942." That also had a certain 
redolence. Wasn't there a bit about a pilot on a raid somewhere in the 
first part?
