Kermode in Reykjavik

About Frank Kermode's preference for Lot49 as possibly illuminated
in the London Review of Books article quoted by Heikki, I have often been 
struck by something in Pynchon that I haven't seen discussed.

It's the seeming fascination with cruelty displayed in GR and V.
Especially in the South West Africa sections, but elsewhere
as well. Almost to the point of titilation, I sometimes think.

Anyone else had this reaction, or am I being overly sensitive?
