Hi all,

I'm very glad to be back on PYNCHON-L after a few years' hiatus.

I'm working on a WWW page devoted to Pynchon, and I'd like to solicit
comments from the list members. Since (a) not everyone is Web-enabled,
and (b) I'm currently isolated behind my company's firewall, I'm reduced
to making this page available in an unsatisfactory text form. It is
attached below.

For those who haven't used WWW, imagine that the underlined portions
are mouse-sensitive and, when clicked, move you automatically to the
relevant file.

Comments are most welcome! Grateful thanks to John Krafft, Stuart
Moulthrop, Jorn Barger, and Tim Ware for their help and support to date.

Thomas Pynchon (1939- ) is an American writer, author of novels, short
stories, and essays. His writings tend to have a profound effect on his
readers -- so much so that a friend of mine once remarked that, having
once read Pynchon, one goes through life as a "reader of Pynchon."

Whether or not that's true for you, this page is intended to collect
some of the resources (electronic and otherwise) available on Pynchon
and his writing.

To get started, take a look at Jorn Barger's Frequently-Asked Questions
                                             --------------------------
(FAQ) List.

If you're interested in connecting with other Pynchon fans and
participating in lively discussions about his work, you can subscribe to
the PYNCHON-L Mailing List, which is maintained by Jody Gilbert.

A Concordance to "Gravity's Rainbow"

Tim Ware has graciously allowed me to give you access to his Concordance to
                                                             --------------
Gravity's Rainbow. It's a nice companion to those who are struggling with the
-----------------
manifold references in this book.

Hyperbola stack

HYPERBOLA 1.1 is a HyperCard stack developed by Stuart Moulthrop and his
-------------
1989 Yale senior seminar as a "digital companion" to Thomas Pynchon's
_Gravity's Rainbow_. The stack contains excerpts from the novel,
accompanied by utilities for commentary and linking. Some comments and
links were built by the seminar. Note that this stack must be converted
with BinHex 4.0. For more information about this project,
contact Stuart Moulthrop, SAMoulthrop at UBmail.ubalt.edu.

Thomas Pynchon Biography

File Pynchon's biography under "very slim volumes." Thomas Pynchon is an
intensely private man who has gone to great lengths to keep all facts about
his life out of the public eye. He refuses to be photographed or
interviewed, though some lucky people in the publishing industry have met
him (and even describe him as charming in person). Thus, the number of
biographical facts available are very few.

Undergraduate Takes on _Gravity's Rainbow_

Here are two papers that were written in 1981 for an undergraduate seminar on
Thomas Pynchon in the English department at the University of California,
Berkeley. This class was taught by Thomas Schaub, who is now at the
University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.

"Pynchon and Paranoia" is the paper I wrote for this seminar. It got a B+,
----------------------
which was probably generous. I'd write it much differently now.

"Mitch's Title" is the paper written by my friend Mitch Ritter. I don't
---------------
know whatgrade he got.
