Tim, C'mon. Everyone - and I do mean everyone - is cut out
to be a Pynchon scholar. We inhabit a two-dimensional world,
each of us born as a blank sheet of paper until that office-
supply carrying God comes around and - rather than write out
each individual story of our lives upon those pages for him
to peruse at His leisure - He gets out His stencils and out-
lines all sorts of different shapes, none the same. Then,
out come the ole scissors. He carefully cuts out the shapes
so that we all fold out, arms stretched, hands holding. A
grand unmeltable snowflake to blanket Him in his loneliness
when the dark dreams come.
Sure, the Koop-man sounds all kooped-up, but we've all had
things go into us. Or to stick with the analogy, we all had
things cut away. I think we're all here (at pynchon-l)
straddling scissors held by the man himself, all in wonder
of his creations. And we wonder what has gone into or has
been taken away from this man. And why the universe has
treated us with less humanity than he would have.
Let the Koop-man be our reality check.
Let the Koop-man be our mascot.
