To be "lovable," though, they have to be big, dark and shiny--again, see
Disney--and the parodies of those eyes in several Chuck Jones cartoons
(the coyote does not have big, shiny eyes--but squirrels and mice do).
To bring us back to Pynchon, who after all does not draw aliens or critters
with big, shiny eyes (I think--but he might want to depict lemmings and pigs?
in that manner), there is that motif of the turning head in GR. What to
make of *that*?
Is it my imagination, or is everyone's style becoming more telegraphic and
cryptic, a la Mr. Koopman (whom I don't always understand but do enjoy--like
a messenger from Finnegan's dream).
