PPS  I've always thought the reason Gravity's Rainbow replaced "Mindless 
Pleasures" as the title of P's great work is that "Mindless Pleasures" would 
have enabled hostile critics to write it off as 
just-another-book-about-drugs.  GR IS one of the great books on altered 
states of mind, chemically induced and otherwise, and IS a book about drugs, 
but of course the real point is that it's NOT JUST a book about drugs.
