I wasn't disrecommending Illuminatus!, I just thought it was a bit out of its
depth here, despite the fancy submarines. And I won't say anything about Eco,
beyond FP, as I've never been inspired to read anything further by him. My
taste runs toward Burroughs, which I have to take in small doses because of
the personal relevance of the imagery, Ballard (Crash, esp.), but I have yet
to find anything I'd call "recommended reading for Pynchon fans" other than
companion books. Lately I've been reading Marquez' Love In The Time Of
Cholera, Ballard's Rushing to Paradise, and some short stories, including
Atwood's Wilderness Tips which was left at my house. Marquez' book is
extremely satisfying if quaint, it has my thumbs-up. Ballard's new book
strikes a sour note with me, he has an obvious outsider view of what
environmentalists are like that really throws me off the whole story.
