Paul Di Filippo's timely advice about other novelists of the Pynchon Era might
be ammended with reference to underground cartoons and the underground press
of the 1960s--the works of R. Crumb (now being featured in the acclaimed
documentary about this thoroughly weird person)seem especially relevant, but
also see THE ELECTRIC KOOL-AID ACID TEST and various personal memoirs by
counterculturists. Wolfe's book about Kesey seems to alluded to at times--
"living inside the system is like being on a bus driven by a madman" and
"double de-clutchingly, heel and toe, away goes Roger Mexico" seem like
references to the Merry Pranksters' bus driver--the legendary Neal Cassady,
linchpin of the Beats and the 60s Counterculture.
