Don:
Not sure what you mean by film being "rediscovered" in the 50s and 60s.
I assume you mean by film critics (a fraternity Pynchon, apparently, was
eager to join...perhaps he was disqualified for not having watched all
of Laing. I sure wouldn't have hired him, if his knowledge of Laing
and Murnau is as meager as you suggest.) But this can't be right.
Certainly, James Agee and Dwight MacDonald were taking films seriously.
Soon to be followed by my mentor Andrew Sarris and, then, on a completely
different track, Pauline Kael. None of these folks needed the boys at
Cahiers de Cinema to set them
straight, did they? Not even Sarris, who played transcontinental footsie
with them.
If I drop names, I apologize. Since I subscribe to the autuer theory of
movie watchin' I tend to think in terms of directors. The list of directors
and films I posted derive entirely from anotations in my copies of V,
Col49, GR, and VL, which I would gladly send you for the right price. Your
suggestions, though, are on the mark and very illuminating for me.
BTW: There is only one cinematographer who could have filmed V., Gregory
Toland. Vittorio Storarro or Gordon Willis could handle the others. And,
yes, Bertoluccis 1900 and The Conformist should be on my list.
