I second David re Don Delillo---earlier stuff is leaner and more 
enjoyable---I mean, you're taking a break after no doubt the High 
Aestheticism of higher ed Eng studies!  In addition to Names and Great Jones 
Street, try also Running Dogs.  Libra deals with the JFK assasination, and 
its fascinating, but very very bleak.  Incidentally, I've been tempted to 
parse your email name (a Scotsman myself) as "attractively wrapped"...a 
pynchonesque name I must say!
