The technique of pulling the future out of the now, on second look is made
more salable in GR by the choice of WW II as the setting...i.e., pulling
the present out of the past. In the "clockwork" of Zurich, however, even
time (especially time?) and its relative perspectives are part of the
marketplace. E.g:

Semyavin the Russian to Slothrope , "The New Mark in Town"-

"It'll get easier. Someday it'll all be done by machine. Information
machines. You are the wave of the future." p.258, Viking, '73

Who's to say the old "cafe system" didn't work as well? Certainly it had
its pleasures.
