Regarding Pynchon's knowledge of German, he admits in his 1969 letter about
the Herero to Thomas Hirsch that his German was "virtually nonexistent."
Regarding Pynchon's job at Boeing: The byline to his 1960 article in
Aerospace Safety identifies him as working in the Bomarc Aero-Space Dept.
Mathew Winston's "The Quest for Pynchon" says he worked as an engineering
aide who collaborated with others on writing technical documents. Siegel and
others claim he worked on the Boeing company magazine. David Cowart quotes
Pynchon Boeing buddy Walter Bailey as saying that TRP worked with him in the
Minuteman Logistics Support Program and wrote for the Minuteman Field Service
News. Take your pick!
