Can't sleep. Mind is racing and it's too hot anyways.
Wondering if TPR will ever write another word of fiction. After going back
and looking at Vineland, I dunno. There are some features which sound like
he's rilly tired of the whole process. It's all there. Waco's in there
(part of Frenesi's sordid intinerary). If I didn't believe in TPR's
generous powers of sublimation, I could easily find the Unabomber hidin'
out in there, too. (I'd love to see that manifesto though, just to be
sure.) There's that little interior monologue of Frenesi's:
"He reminded her of herself when she was in 24fps, inside some wraparound
fantasy that she was offering her sacrifice at the altar of Art, and worse,
believing that Art gave a shit- here was Hector with so many of the same
delusions, just as hopelessly insulated, giving up what seemed already too
much for something just as cheesy and worthless." (p. 346, Little Brown,
1990)
The whole book is a much better read today, though. It was kind of
overshadowed by the fall of The Wall, at the time, but now with the
militias and Unabomber and OK City an all, it achieves a new meaning...
almost prophetic, and much closer to home.
Well, if he does this rumored gig circa the antebellum era and beyond,
what's that about? Wasn't that century pretty well scoped out by Huck and
Tom on this side and Oliver, Pip and David over there? Pretty hard acts to
follow....Wait a minute....I wouldn't mind seeing those dudes on stage
together (has that been done already?). Kind of like the "Super Groups of
the the late 60's early 70's....Huck on mouth organ, Tom on rythm guitar,
David on keyboards, Oliver on lead guitar, Pip on lead vocals...bring in
Jim on bass, find themselves a drummer, I could dig it. Adolescent males to
the rescue. It might be fresh.
Let's hope we don't have to wait sixteen years to find out whatever it is
he's up to...if anything.
