jp, I wasn't joking!
This is Bob Woodward on Alan Greenspan:
In the 1950s, he [Greenspan] entered into the small circle attending the
popular philosopher Ayn Rand, champion of laissez-faire capitalism and
author of the Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Greenspan spent his
Saturday nights debating with Rand and her acolytes, one of whom, Nathaniel
Brandon, dubbed Greenspan "the Undertaker." A follower of the philosophy
of logical positivism, which held that nothing could be known rationally
with absolute certainty, Greenspan argued to the group that his own
existence could not be conclusively proven and therefore had to be doubted.
Branden wrote in his memoir that he and Rand privately ridiculed
Greenspan's radical skepticism. One day, after Greenspan finally conceded
that he must exist, Branden said he asked Rand, "Guess who exists?" She
replied, "You've done it? The Undertaker has decided he exists?"
This is pretty much Standard Operating Procedure at the Wacky World of the
Fed. If you want to be really depressed read William Grieder's masterful
"Secrets of the Temple."
But the next time you run into Greenspan, you know what to do to him, right?
