Pynchon as the Phantom

I guess what I had in mind with my Replacement for Pynchon riff 
was the great comic strip THE PHANTOM, in which, you'll recall,
each generation of a family provided a member to carry on the 
tradition, but all the natives were too stupid to realize that
and they thought it was one immortal man.  And then again maybe
what I'm trying to come to terms with is a WORLD WITHOUT PYNCHON!
Yikes!  How could it ever be?
