Jimmy's evening, along with the lives leading up to it, has a feeling of 
the "engineered". His father was "satisfied at having secured for his son 
qualities often unpurchaseable." Melanie's creators no doubt had  
analogous feeling about their little windup fetishe. Pynchon's book 
_talks about_ inanimateness--maybe excessively--as well as portraying it.
