Also, re Gibson and Pynchon, their greatest similarity besides 
various machine-obsessed zeitgeists is their cinematic style. Oh, a-and 
member the first lines of "Neuromancer" and "Gravity's Rainbow"?

"The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned 
 to a dead channel."
 
"A screaming comes across the sky."

Of course, this dates Gibson.  Or does it?  I always thought he was trying
for an image of that buzzy, low signal-to-noise greyout that pot smokers
used to call "the ant wars".  But my Sony, when tuned to a dead channel,
turns a bright, Navy blue.

Still no information, but it's pretty as heck and covers up the mess behind
it. And isn't that really all we want from late capitalism?
