I should have remembered the comment in the Spike Jones notes . . .
slipped my memory.
  Tim Campbell - I wasn't criticising TP for lack of political
commitment - I think he's clearly a major political novelist in the
US prophetic tradition. My point was, simply: a) some (not all) of
the time, TP disappears into a particular discourse or tone of voice
- Baedeker, hippie jargon, etc. b) as was noted, GR may be a great
american novel about Vietnam, but TP chose a different setting - it
may also be relevant that all the good books about Vietnam (that I
know of) were written by people who had actually been there.
  (I recognize that *Full Metal Jacket* may be a counter-example -
the movie, I mean, shot in East London).
