	Why, I wonder, did Pynchon choose a loose style for VINELAND?  I 
suspect that the decision relates to his politics -- that Pynchon 
himself may have sensed something inegalitarian and exclusive about 
GRAVITY'S RAINBOW.  The book, after all, speaks mostly to college 
professors, who (charming as they are) belong among the Elite, not among 
the Preterite.
        I would apologize for the snotty fatuity of my earlier 
message, but I find Mr. Mascaro's outrage entertaining.  How clever his 
appropriation of Pynchon's syntax -- a-and funny too!
