You might check out (if you haven't already) Jules Siegel's "Who is 
Thomas Pynchon - and Why Did He Take Off With My Wife?" in the March 1977 
Playboy.  Siegel roomed with Pynchon at Cornell and kept in contact with 
him until shortly after the publication of GR.
