Perhaps Pynchon read THE RECOGNITIONS, or perhaps he and Gaddis
simply share the same literary father -- James Joyce, a paterfamilias to
rival Bach.
Whatever the case, THE RECOGNITIONS, along with GRAVITY'S
RAINBOW and Joseph McElroy's LOOKOUT CARTRIDGE, surely qualifies as
one of the great, long American novels.
