Pynchon's Next Book
"Thomas Pynchon works according to his own inner rythms," writes Sarah
Lyall in her NY Times "Book Notes" column (April 20, 1994).
William Strachan, editor-in-chief and associate publisher with Henry Holt
Company, announced last year that Pynchon's next novel will be published by
Holt. Strachan was quoted in the Times as saying:
We don't know what the new book is about. He has mentioned that it may be
on a certain subject and I can't say what that subject is because he asked
me not to. he could tell me that the book was about X, and I wouldn't know
what he really meant or how he was going to use it.
Pynchon's most recent novel, Vineland, was published by Litle, Brown. His
editor at that company, Ray Roberts, switched over to Holt last year and
brought the legendary literary recluse with him. Neither Strachan nor
Roberts specified when the new novel would be published. When asked,
Strachan replied: "We can't say. I don't know."
What is most appealing about young folks, after all, is the changes, not
the still photographs of finished character but the movie, the soul in
flux. -- Thomas Pynchon
