As for myself, the only Vidal I've read was _Live from Golgotha_.  I read 
it because the whole premise of the book (TV crews going back in time to 
cover the crucifixion) sounded promising.  I was sorely disappointed.

As for "cattiness", after reading a review of Vidal's autobiography in 
_Time_, yes, I would have to say that Mr. Vidal is rather "catty".
