Ran across this in this year's Penguin Fiction Challenge. One of the clues
for a book is:

"Surely one of this century's most important works of fiction, this
complex novel in the tradition of James Joyce's Ulysses charts the modern
world's 'progress' towards devastation and features a classic anti-hero in
the personage of an American lieutenant whose body anticipates German
rocket launchings."

"Whose body"?? Edited for family audiences I guess.
