Andrew is right to bring Kuhn into this conversation.  Maybe those 
incredulous comments he's responding to can be better expressed via the 
concept of the paradigm shift.  A-and it's not just lit "telling" science 
what to do, it's a reciprocal situation with nobody "telling" anyone 
anything.  Simply, a community finds a particular climate in terms of 
inquiry, what's currently interesting [important?] to study.  ANohter 
community is [influenced?], maybe even unknowingly, some, like Hayles 
suggests, by this climate, and thus follows a similar trajectory.
