Bunuel...

I have to throw myself in with the camp of Bunuel fans. I san BELLE DE JOUR 
and was very impressed with it. I think what I enjoyed about it is 
Bunuel's refusal to condemn the main character for her fantasies. Despite 
the fact that the source material for the movie was a condemnatory 
"psychological" novel (of the type that would only deal with alternative 
forms of sexuality as 'studies of illness'), the movie places the 
protagonist's awakening as a potentially positive force. Even the ending 
can be seen as a liberating one, not something downbeat. Great movie. 
Considering when it was made, it really makes almost all American films 
about sexualty look particularly pathetic.
