i saw Murray debate Stephen Jay gould at harvard last spring.  and 
actually had murray pegged as a pointsman-type--committed beyond all 
rationality, to, well, rationality (of numbers anyway).  it's 
interesting though, that when a questioner brought up the deceased 
mr. herrnstein, murray nearly broke down into tears--stunning the 
audience with a bit of humanity...

course, gould would make a fine pynchon character himself.
