My take (not entirely original) is that Nowhere Man = No. 6, from that 
classic 60's paranoiac TV delight, The Prisoner.

"What do you want?"
"We want information . . ."
"You won't get it!"
"By Hook or by Crook, we will."
"Who are you?"
"You are number 6."
"Who is number 1?"
"Bwahahahahah!"
"I am not a number, I am a free man!"

Great stuff, IMHO.
