I haven't read this, but it might be fun to go back to Tom Wolfe's Electric
Koo-Aid Acid Test, which was the definitive Kesey tribute of the 60s.

Yeah, definitely, the main difference being that I couldn't get through
Sailor Song because, at least by mid-point, it had no substance, just a
string of clever, determinedly funny incidents. Seemed like Kesey had lost
his oars and was trying to pick up someone else's.
