Seems to me that at the beginning of chapter 3, TRP all but comes out and says
that "V" is all things to all people. "As spread thighs are to the libertine,
flights of migratory birds to the ornithologist, the working part of his tool
bit to the production machinist...." (p. 61) In other words, "V" is some kind
of a personal symbol, be it alphabetic or physical, for each individual. If
you think hard you could probably come up with a significant symbol in your own
life centering on the letter or symbol (or stencil, heh heh heh) "V"....
