Roger and the Sex Pistols

This seems like rather an odd way to end months of lurking on Pynchon-l,
but what the hell...

I couldn't resist adding to the Siskel (lightweight) v. Ebert (um,
heavyweight?) critic mini-debate by noting that Beyond TVOTD was not
Rog's only venture into scriptwriting for Russ Meyer. Less well known is
their association with the most notorious punk rockers ever.

What with the currently unfolding spectacle of the Sex Pistols' Filthy
Lucre' tour (unwholesome in a whole new way), I dug through my old
Rolling Stone's until I found the infamous Johnny Rotten cover
(10/20/77, RS #250). In the midst of the story "Rock is Sick and Living
in London" by Charles M. Young, is the following tidbit (or perhaps a
titbid?):

"Russ Meyer...shows me into his nicely furnished apartment...and motions
to a slightly pudgy young man on the other side of the room. 'This is
Roger Ebert,' he says. 'He won the Pulitzer Prize for film criticism
[hmmm..one up on TRP] and he's writing the [Sex Pistols] movie with me.
At the Chicago Sun Times, he's Dr. Jekyll. With me, he's Mr. Hyde. He's
really into tits.'

"Ebert laughs and says 'Remember, without me, there wouldn't be any
mention of Bambi in this movie.'" Later, while out to dinner with Meyer
and Johnny Rotten, Ebert entertains Young with a joke about an elephant
having his testicles crushed by two bricks. Wonder if he still
remembers that one?

Ah well, back to lurk mode, in which I'll try to keep abreast of the
latest developments in this debate...

P.S. OK, one more: it was at this meeting with Ebert & Meyer that Rotten
gave his immortal reaction to the recent death of Elvis: "Fuckin' good
riddance to bad rubbish. I don't give a fuckin' shit, and nobody else
does either. It's just fun to fake sympathy, that's all they're doin'."
