The same interesting idea pops up in the novel _At Play in the Fields of
the Lord_ (but not in the movie) in reminiscing conversation made by the
character, the knife-fighter and copilot, played in the movie by Tom
Waits.  I haven't compared the publication dates of the two books to see
who might have gotten the idea from whom.  I'd do it right now but I don't
have Mathiessen's book at hand. 

The movie is notable in having Darryl Hannah in a brief full frontal nude
shot.  (Also, Tom Berenger, for those who are so inclined.) See _The Bare
Facts_ for more details.  (That's "most useful book on movies published in
the last twenty years" per Joe Bob Briggs, who ought to know.)
